Georges St-Pierre retiring from the UFC?
February 13, 2010
Arguably one of the best fighters to ever enter the Octagon, GSP is rumored to walk away from the UFC to prepare for the Olympics.
You read it, Georges St-Pierre, scheduled to co-main event UFC 111 on March, is rumored to walk away from the UFC to train and represent Canada at the 2012 Olympics in freestyle wrestling.
But did the words ”I’m walking away from the UFC” really came out of the mouth of reigning UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre? Well, Randy Couture claims GSP didn’t say anything about walking away. In fact, Couture says St-Pierre is frustrated about the way the media took his comments about the POSSIBILITY of training for the 2012 Olympics out of context.
”I talked to him at length at an appearance,” Randy Couture stated. ”He’s a little frustrated with the media, frankly. He said that they are blowing this whole thing out of proportion.”
So if the media blew ”this whole thing out of proportion,” what exactly did GSP say? Apparently, he was talking about the possibility of training for the freestyle wrestling competition in the 2012 Olympics.
St-Pierre said that to enter the 2012 Olympic Games, he ”would have to focus on wrestling and dedicate myself 100 percent for a period of time. I would not retire now but if I decided to do it, I would have to dedicate myself 100 percent, I would say maybe for a year and a half or so.”
Randy Couture said GSP’s comments were misconstrued and that he doesn’t think the reigning welterweight champ will leave the sport to train for the Olympics.
”His response to a media question was, ‘Well, if I was going to do that I would have to take a year off to concentrate only on wrestling.’ He didn’t say he was going to,” Couture noted. ”He just said he would have to commit to it 100 percent.”
”I don’t think he wants to do that,” he continued. ”He’s a fighter and he realizes he’s a fighter. He’s obviously done a great job with wrestling in the fight game. But first and foremost he feels like a fighter and he thinks the whole thing has been blown out of proportion by the media.”
For the sake of MMA fans around the world, let’s hope Couture is right.
