Mike D’Antoni is changing the NBA this 2009 Season

January 29, 2009

Ah… Mike D’Antoni, the guy with a large D on his name but refuses to play D on the basketball court.

In case you haven’t taken a gander at the guy, Mike D’Antoni is the current head coach of the New York Knicks this 2008-09 NBA basketball season. And aside from simply bastardizing the legacy Stephon Marbury was hoping to have when he finally retires, D’Antoni is changing the NBA slowly but surely.

Just so you know, it has been well documented that defense wins championships. Since the 1988-89 Detroit Pistons won the NBA title through defense, every NBA champion since has been playing from the same style.

Mike D’Antoni on the other hand, Al Harringtonlikes to put up huge numbers on the scoreboard, with a simple mentality that if they ended up with more points than the other team, they’ll eventually win the game.

And it doesn’t matter to him too if he’s with a powerhouse team than can score effortlessly or a fucked up one like the New York Knicks.

Since Mike D’Antoni left the Phoenix Suns to take over the head coaching job in New York, we’ve already seen some changes that proves D’Antoni is this generation’s trend setter in basketball.

All of a sudden, Al Harrington is putting up 20 to 30 points a night, David Lee is becoming one of the top five guys this season playing his position and Nate Robinson’s fantasy value is climbing off the charts.

Hell, even Chris Duhon, a backup point guard in the NBA, came up with a franchise record 22 a few days ago, making the guy go from backup point guard to the next coming of Magic Johnson.

That’s all thanks to D’Antoni’s ‘’seven seconds or less’’ offense, the style of play that he’s been preaching since his days in Phoenix. That enabled Shawn Marion (when he was still in Phoenix) to become the third best fantasy player in the NBA despite of the weird way he shoots the ball. That also enabled Amare Stoudemire to rack in 30 points and 15 rebounds a night. And finally, that may have also let Steve Nash win the MVP trophy twice.

Now in New York, D’Antoni once again, has basically virtual unknowns for players. Well, technically, he has one big name guy in his roster in Stephon Marbury, but since D’Antoni has been pushing Steph’ away from New York ever since he got there, we won’t be considering Starbury a Knick in D’Antoni’s scheme of things.

Will D’Antoni’s ‘’seven seconds or less’’ offense WIN in the NBA? Well, as of press time, D’Antoni’s SSOL has been equating to a LOSS and until they start winning, then maybe, the rest of the NBA will start paying attention to this visionary.
