Antonio Margarito looses his boxing license for 1 year

February 11, 2009

Antonio Margarito suspendedThe Boxing license of Mexican Superstar Boxer Antonio Margarito has been revoked for one year by the California State Athletic Commission for the use of illegal wraps discovered before his boxing match against Sugar Shane Mosley. The trainer of Antonio Margarito, Javier Capetillo has also lost his license for the same amount of time in spite of his testimony that the usage of the said substance was a mistake. The decision of the California Athletic Commission has shocked Bob Arum, the Top Dog of Top Rank Promotions who also attended the hearing of Antonio Margarito with his trainer Javier Capetillo in Sacramento, California. Antonio Margarito’s corner insisted that the former welterweight champion had no knowledge whatsoever of the illegal nature of the wraps, which contained a plaster of Paris substance found in his wraps prior to the fight.

“It’s an absolute outrage,” Bob Arum said. “It’s something that I never thought would happen in the United States, where somebody who is totally and completely innocent, has no knowledge what happened, and didn’t do anything wrong, gets his license taken away because his trainer allegedly did something wrong. Everybody is blown away. It’s absolutely crazy.”

Naazim Richardson, the trainer of Sugar Shane Mosley noticed that the wraps of Antonio Margarito were a bit harder than that of the usual materials used in all boxing matches. Naazim Richardson then ordered to re-wrap the hands of Antonio Margarito only to stumble upon the plaster of Paris like substance that was under the outer wraps.

“The conduct of both Mr. Margarito and Mr. Capetillo was unacceptable and threatened the health and safety of another licensee,” Carrie Lopez, The Director of the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs said. “Today’s action shows that both the Department of Consumer Affairs and the California State Athletic Commission take the issue of boxer safety very seriously, and will move quickly when a licensee’s actions threaten the safety of others.”

Sugar Shane Mosley went on to win that bout via a ninth round stoppage of Antonio Margarito in what turned out to be one of the biggest upsets in recent years as online sportsbooks had the odds way in favour of Antonio Margarito. Sugar Shane Mosley would be longing for a rematch with Miguel Cotto whose loss to Antonio Margarito is also in question because of all the reports that have surfaced about the illegal hand wraps. The WBA welterweight title would once again be up for grabs. In the said hearing of the Antonio Margarito case, Bob Arum was furious of how the commission handled the sanction of the individuals stating that Antonio Margarito does not deserve to get his license revoked, the sanction on trainer Javier Capetillo was likewise honourable. In a years time, the two would be requesting for another boxing license and most likely would produce scepticism in more ways than one, especially the way the sports world has been barraged with cheating and performance enhancing drug reports over the past few months.

“There are legal remedies, but there are practical remedies that would keep him fighting,” Bob Arum of Top Rank Promotions said.
