Is Tom Brady OK to play for the Patriots this season?
September 3, 2009

Things are getting a little scary in Foxboro again.
With only a few more days before the 2009 NFL football season begins, Patriots fans are once again going through the same thing they went through last year when they saw Tom Brady go down as early as the first game of the 2008 campaign.
This time though, these fans already have to pay a close attention to Tom Brady even before the regular season begins. You see, their prized quarterback went down with a shoulder injury in a game against the Washington Redskins after he was hit hard by Redskins defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth, of all people. And to make matters worse, it was a preseason game.
That’s a huge blow considering that the New England Patriots were hoping to pick up where they left off two years ago, when they were beating everybody BUT the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII. This coming season was suppose to be their chance to relive their incredible run that almost went undefeated but with Brady out this early, equaling their 2007 campaign should be the least of their worries.
For what it’s worth, Tom Brady remains optimistic. He’s even expecting to play in their last preseason game against the same New York Giants team that ended their pursuit for perfection two years ago. Go figure.
”I have bumps and bruises,” Brady said in his weekly appearance on Boston radio station WEEI. ”It’s a physical game. Like I said, I fell a little bit awkwardly, but I’m expecting to be out there and I’m expecting to play this week, if coach let’s me. We’ll just see how the week goes.”
Brady claims he’s ready to take some hits, even from guys like Albert Haynesworth and that strong safety playing for the Kansas City Chiefs who literally put him out of commission last season, Bernard Pollard.
”I’m confident in the way that I train so I’m prepared for those,” Brady said on WEEI. ”Some of those you can’t avoid, like last year, but it’s really part, it’s part of the job description. Anybody who plays this game needs be willing to play it less than 100 percent of perfect, which, after that first training camp practice, nobody is 100 percent.”
So is Tom Brady OK?
”What does it matter?” he said. ”We don’t play for two weeks. The reality is no matter what I say, you know, no matter how confident I am, we’re just going to have to wait until Sept. 14, or hopefully, this Thursday, if coach lets us play. I mean, traditionally, he doesn’t let us play in this game, but if he wants me to play, I’ll play.”
