Lebron James going from no.23 to no.6?

November 22, 2009

lebron_jamesApparently, that’s what he said.

LeBron James has made it public that he will no longer wear the No.23 in favor of Michael Jordan once the 2009 NBA basketball season is over.

Yes, LeBron James thinks everybody wearing the No.23 should surrender the number to pay homage to Michael Jordan. As to what number will he be wearing once he gives up 23, James says he’s going with 6.

”I just think what Michael Jordan has done for the game has to be recognized some way soon,” said the Cleveland Cavaliers superstar, who has worn 23 since he was a high school sophomore. ”There would be no LeBron James, no Kobe Bryant, no Dwyane Wade if there wasn’t Michael Jordan first.”

”He can’t get the logo [Hall of Famer Jerry West's silhouette adorns the NBA's logo], and if he can’t, something has to be done.”

”I feel like no NBA player should wear 23. I’m starting a petition, and I’ve got to get everyone in the NBA to sign it. Now, if I’m not going to wear No. 23, then nobody else should be able to wear it.”

The NBA has never retired a number across the league, something the National Hockey League (NHL) did for Wayne Gretzky’s No.99 and what Major League Baseball (MLB) did for Jackie Robinson’s No.42.

”If you see 23, you think about Michael Jordan,” James said. ”You see game-winning shots, you think about Michael Jordan; you see guys fly through the air, you think about Michael Jordan; you see fly kicks, you think about Michael Jordan.”

”He did so much, it has to be recognized, and not just by putting him in the Hall of Fame.”

So if he’s ditching the number 23 for the number 6, why 6? Well, as far as James is concerned, his second favorite player next to Michael Jordan is ”Doctor J” Julius Erving.

If he doesn’t win a championship wearing No.6, it’s only a matter of time before he sends another petition across the league to retire that number as well.
